EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are the vital link in the chain of the healthcare team. Upon completion of the program, the student will be able to properly assess, manage and transport a patient to a proper medical facility while ensuring the safety of all members of the EMS crew, the patient and all bystanders. The new EMS program at Florida Career Institute can train you with the skills necessary to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service, fire departments, hospitals and industries. The program is designed to prepare the student as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) and as an Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (paramedic) and is approved by the State of Florida, Department of Health; the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services; and the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training.

Graduates of the EMS program will be trained in the following procedures:

  • Patient assessment
  • Splinting/bandaging
  • Patient stabilization
  • Patient movement and transportation
  • Administration of medication
  • Initiation of intravenous fluids
  • Interpreation of electrocardiograms
  • Defibrillation
  • Endotracheal incubation
  • Various surgical procedures such as cricothyrotomy
